  8.                                   QUICK START
  9.  
  10.              This section  is for  the LOANPMT  user who doesn't want to
  11.         initially wade  through all  the  program  documentation.    The
  12.         experienced PC  user will  find LOANPMT  very intuitive and thus
  13.         very easy  to learn  and use.  It is likely that most users will
  14.         only need  to read this section and use the on-line help (F1) to
  15.         become proficient using LOANPMT.

  17.              If you  will be  running the  program from  floppy disk, we
  18.         recommend copying  the program files LOANPMT.EXE and LOANPMT.OVR
  19.         to another  floppy disk.  Always run the program from a diskette
  20.         other than  the distribution  disk.  This preserves the original
  21.         files in case something goes wrong with the working copies.

  23.              If you will be using a hard drive, we recommend copying the
  24.         LOANPMT files  to a  directory named \LPMT, but any name of your
  25.         choice will  work.  If you are upgrading from a previous version
  26.         of LOANPMT,  you can  simply copy the new version over the older
  27.         version.   If you  want to  keep the  older version on your hard
  28.         disk you  must create  a new  directory (i.e., \LPMT20, etc.) to
  29.         install this  version into.  If you need further help setting up
  30.         the program,  see the section titled "Installing LOANPMT" in the
  31.         manual.

  33.              Although LOANPMT  is a  DOS  application,  it  can  run  in
  34.         Microsoft Windows.   See  the section  titled "Using  LOANPMT in
  35.         Windows" for  instructions on  how to  setup LOANPMT  to run  in
  36.         Windows 3.x.

  38.              LOANPMT uses  program overlay  files.  Program overlay code
  39.         is loaded  into RAM  only when  it is  needed by  LOANPMT.   The
  40.         program uses  this technique  to conserve  precious RAM.    This
  41.         leaves more  of RAM  available to  LOANPMT for  such  things  as
  42.         displaying help  pages, amortization tables, and loan comparison
  43.         tables.   There is  one drawback to using program overlay files.
  44.         It substantially  degrades the  performance of the program if it
  45.         is running  from floppy  disk.  To offset this drawback, LOANPMT
  46.         can load  the overlay  files  into  expanded  memory  (EMS,  not
  47.         extended memory, XMS) whenever it is found.  There is NO program
  48.         degradation when  the overlay  files use  EMS.   Running LOANPMT
  49.         from  a   hard  disk   without  EMS   will  barely  degrade  its
  50.         performance.   See the section titled "Overlays and LOANPMT.OVR"
  51.         in the manual for more information.

  53.              To run  LOANPMT, LOANPMT's  drive  and  directory  must  be
  54.         selected or  they must  be in  the computer's  path.  At the DOS
  55.         prompt, type  LOANPMT and press ENTER.  The overlay manager will
  56.         initialize and the data entry screen will appear.

  58.              To exit the program and return to DOS, simply pull down the
  59.         Exit menu  and select  Yes.  This can be accomplished many ways.

  64.         The  easiest   way  is   to  press   the  "Alt"   and  "X"  keys
  65.         simultaneously to pull down the menu.  Then press the "Y" key to
  66.         select Yes.   If  you have  a mouse, left-click on "Exit" in the
  67.         menu bar, and then left-click on "Yes" in the pull-down menu.

  69.              Use the  ENTER, TAB,  SHIFT TAB,  UP ARROW,  and DOWN ARROW
  70.         keys to move between LOANPMT's data entry fields.  If you have a
  71.         mouse, you  also can  make your  selections by  left-clicking on
  72.         them.   Then, simply  enter the appropriate value in each field,
  73.         menu, etc.

  75.              Each LOANPMT  pull-down menu option and data field also can
  76.         be selected  by using  its hotkey.   Each  item's hotkey  is the
  77.         highlighted character  that appears  in its  name.    To  use  a
  78.         hotkey, press the Alt key and the hotkey simultaneously.

  80.              The currently  selected compute field is displayed near the
  81.         upper left  area of  the screen.  LOANPMT updates and redisplays
  82.         the selected  field each  time new  data is entered at any other
  83.         field.   To change  the computed  field, pull  down the Settings
  84.         menu by  pressing Alt+G (or left-click the mouse on "Settings").
  85.         Next, select  "Computed field" from the pull-down menu, and then
  86.         select  a new compute field from the pop-up menu.

  88.              The loan data currently on the screen can be saved to disk.
  89.         To save loan data, pull down the File menu by pressing the "Alt"
  90.         and "I"  keys simultaneously  (or left-click  on "File" with the
  91.         mouse).   Next, select "Save" from the pull-down menu.  A dialog
  92.         box will appear to accept a filename for the data file.  LOANPMT
  93.         supplies its  own file  extension  of  ".PMT"  for  data  files.
  94.         (Note:  The F2 key is a short-cut key for saving loan data.)

  96.              Previously saved  loan data files can be reloaded.  To load
  97.         loan data, pull down the File menu by pressing the "Alt" and "I"
  98.         keys simultaneously  (or left-click  on "File"  with the mouse).
  99.         Next, select  "Load" from the pull-down menu.  A dialog box will
  100.         appear.   Key in a known filename or enter wildcards to access a
  101.         file selection menu.  A sample loan data file named EXAMPLE1.PMT
  102.         is on  the distribution  disk.   Place the  distribution disk in
  103.         drive A,  key in A:* in the dialog box, and press ENTER to see a
  104.         selection menu.   (NOTE:   The  F3 key  is a  short-cut key  for
  105.         loading loan data.)

  107.              Amortization tables  (or loan  payoffs, if  Payoff  is  the
  108.         computed field)  can be  displayed, printed,  or saved.    Press
  109.         Alt+L (or  left-click "Table"  with the  mouse) to pull down the
  110.         Table menu.   Then  select the type of output from the pull-down
  111.         menu.   Finally, enter  or select  the appropriate  items in the
  112.         resulting pop-up  menu.   Results saved to disk are ASCII (text)
  113.         files and can be edited and printed the same as any ASCII file.

  115.              Loan comparison tables can be displayed, printed, or saved.
  116.         A loan  comparison table's  initial values  are taken  from  the
  117.         currently  entered   loan  data.     Comparison  tables  can  be
  118.

  122.         constructed using  two different  methods.  One method shows the
  123.         incremental effects  of both  loan principal  and the  number of
  124.         payments.   The second  method shows  the incremental effects of
  125.         both loan principal and annual interest rate (APR).  To create a
  126.         loan comparison  table, press  Alt+A (or left-click the mouse on
  127.         "Comparisons") to  pull down  the Comparisons menu.  Next select
  128.         the comparison  method from  the pull-down  menu; principal  vs.
  129.         payments (or  years) or  principal vs.  APR.  In the next pop-up
  130.         dialog box,  enter the  incremental  values  for  the  two  loan
  131.         parameters displayed  and press ENTER (or double-click the mouse
  132.         in either  field).   From the  next pop-up  menu  select  either
  133.         display, print,  or save.  Depending on this selection, enter or
  134.         select the appropriate items in the resulting pop-up menu.

  136.              LOANPMT uses  the file LPMTINIT.PMT to initialize each time
  137.         it is started.  If the file is not found, LOANPMT initializes to
  138.         predefined defaults.  Since this file is a standard LOANPMT .PMT
  139.         file,  its  contents  can  be  edited  to  contain  user-defined
  140.         defaults.  Along with the loan data fields, currency symbol, and
  141.         the date  format are saved to the file.  To change its contents,
  142.         load it  and make  the changes  to LOANPMT's  screen you want as
  143.         your user-defined  defaults.  Finally re-save it as LPMTINIT and
  144.         answer "Yes" to overwrite the previous version of the file.
